How to be a part of the #FixYoungAmerica movement

Getting involved in the right things while in college is one of the most important things you can do to help you find success in your collegiate and professional life.

#FixYoungAmerica is one college movement that you can get involved with right now.

#FixYoungAmerica is a national movement that is seeking to find solutions to end the youth unemployment crisis (at a 60-year high) and what they are calling the broken American dream. 

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Young Entrepreneur Council are holding a national rally for #FixYoungAmerica Thursday April 19 at 2pm ET across 300 college campuses. To get involved, all you have to do is go to http://fixyoungamerica.com/rally/ and click the blue “Rally With Us” button to share your e-mail and get info on a rally near you, or how you can start one on your college campus.

According to The Daily Beast, The founder of the Young Entrepreneur Council and the #FixYoungAmerica movement, Scott Gerber, “realizes economic woes are widespread, but wonders if Americans realize that, ‘Our generation has been hit far worse than any other. We’re graduating without the needed skills in today’s economy. We can’t get jobs, we can’t think about getting married, having babies or buying a house. We represent the broken dream of America and we can’t let it continue.’”

The goal of the rally is to recruit highly influential comedian Stephen Colbert to champion the cause that is aimed to find creative solutions to improve youth employment nationwide.

Whether this movement inspires you or not, I encourage you to plug into movements that do inspire you. Let’s be honest…we’re not exactly a generation known for its civic engagement. Starting movements and being a part of things that you really care about will spark others to do the same.

Young people are leading some of the biggest innovations in our world (e.g. Facebook, anyone?) and you can also lead the charge to fix any number of problems for which you have interest and passion. In fact, you are probably uniquely qualified to make a difference in more ways than you realize.

Not only does it attract some of the most incredible speakers/leaders, but it also has a panel of 50 highly successful people from top companies that you can meet and network with. From a US Congresswoman to the CFO of Fox Searchlight Productions to the Executive Director of Teach for America - the people you meet at this conference could dramatically change your life and your opportunities. 

In my life networking and gaining the advice from successful people at calibers that I had never encountered before was the key to most of my successes. This Conference is the end of October and early registration is only $70! Talk to your advisors, get your club to go - or be really bold and just go yourself. Trust me - it is these kinds of experiences that can change everything for you.

And as you read these short descriptions of the incredible things these young women have done - don't let yourself think "man what am I doing with my life" or "I could never do something like that." Instead, let their short stories remind you that it is possible for you to affect change right now, with whatever resources you have around you. What excuses are you making? Let these women inspire you and remind you that we don't really have any excuses.
